Adrienneâs damn hell hounds came padding after her when I was pacing near the windows, wanting to be near Amelia.
âAdrienne,â I said there quietly. âI'm not sure I trust the Fae.â
âOf course you don't, and of course you shouldn't. He's Fae.â
âHow do we know he's even really a king? None of us have ever gone further than the forest that surrounds us.â
âNone of us but you have even gone into the forest,â she corrected. âBoth because we don't want to displease our host who lets us move the castle back and forth between these worlds, and because it is a terrifying place. But you couldnât resist a terrifying place, could you, Wolf?â
âWe don't even really know where we are... and he could just tell us anything about the Fae world... maybe heâs not even a real king.â
âDoes it matter? Heâs useful to us, and he finds us useful.â
âUseful how?â I automatically bristled at the words.
âHe values having us to work for him in our world. He doesn't want to spend time doing tedious tasks. He doesn't like to enter their world at all. Too much iron. Too much... Everything.â
âI know, humans are annoying. Why...â Two pieces came together for me. âHe didn't help you to find and capture Amelia. He sent you to capture Amelia.â
âNot exactly. Using her as breeding stock was his idea. He said he knew a part Fae, part shifter who would be strong enough to carry a child for us.â
âWhy did he want her?â
âHe wanted to tie us to him. As I said, he canât travel into the mortal world easily. He has us to do his bidding now.â
âThatâs suspicious as hell, Adrienne.â I returned to pacing.
âTo be fair, Wolf, at the start of this plan, I did not know that you were in love with this girl. Obviously, I would have been sensitive to your feelings if I had known. Though I'm not sure who else you would want to get pregnantââ
âIâm not in love with her,â I said automatically. I couldn't let anyone think I felt too protective of Amelia.
I wasnât sure what Aodhanâs game was, but was it possible he had hypnotized Adrienne? Because the vampire queen had protected her hive for two hundred years with her shrewd mind, and yet, now I could hear Aodhanâs hell-hounds panting at her feet.
Adrienne was still speaking. But my mind had already gone somewhere far away, trying to make sense of my next move.
âDo you know what I wonder, Wolf?â Adrienne had closed the distance between us in a few inaudible steps, so I didnât know she was close enough to touch until she spoke. âWhat do you get out of working with us?â
âI wasn't aware it was optional.â
âNo, it isn't. But why would you have more of a tie to us than you have to your own kind?â
âI don't know them. I've spent five years with you all. And I believe I've proven my loyaltyââ I gritted.
Adrienne touched my arm to cut me off. âWe don't need to review your resume.
